Study #3195 Resistance Exercise Response - The BRIO Study

Purpose of this study: The purpose of this study is to examine how cellular processes related to aging may influence a person's response to exercise, including changes in muscle size, muscle strength, and their body's response to dietary carbohydrates
Target population:
Men and women aged 65 years or older, defined as sedentary and at risk for mobility disability
Inclusion criteria:
- 65 years or older
- Not currently engaged in regular physical activity (sedentary)
- Have some difficulty with daily activities
- Willing to be randomized into either the health education or exercise intervention program
- Willing to be transported or transport themselves to the HNRCA for intervention and assessments
Major exclusions:
- Currently using an anti-coagulant or anti-platelet therapy
- Lidocaine allergy
- Acute or terminal illness
- Type 1 diabetes
- Type 2 diabetes with insulin use
Length of study:
- 24 weeks (~6 months)
Residency:
- None
Time commitment/number of visits:
- 24 weeks - 2 baseline visits, 2 follow-up visits:
- Education group: 1 visit per week (24 intervention visits); 28 visits total
- Exercise group: 3 visits per week (72 intervention visits); 76 visits total
Can I work?
- Yes, but if subjects employed by Tufts University qualify to participate in the study, they cannot participate as subjects during hours in which they are being compensated by Tufts.
Payment:
Participants could receive up to $1,000 for completing the entire study. This will be broken up by visit as follows:
- Baseline visit 1: $125
- Baseline visit 2: $125
- Follow up visit 1 (visit 3): $125
- Follow up visit 2 (visit 4): $125
- Study completion: $500
