The Dietary Assessment Unit (DAU) provides services and expertise in all steps of dietary data assessment including data collection, coding, cleaning, management and analysis. The Unit is equipped to collect and process food records, 24-hour dietary recalls, food frequency questionnaires, brief assessment tools, and other dietary intake and behavior questionnaires.  The Dietary Assessment Unit maintains a centralized, consistent and high standard of quality-controlled dietary data collection services. The HNRCA holds a license for the Nutrition Data System for Research (NDSR) developed by the Nutrition Coordinating Center, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN which offers standardized dietary data collection methodology and allows for quality-controlled data entry and nutrient calculations.  The Dietary Assessment Unit has an OpScan 6 optical mark reader (OMR) scanner from Scantron Corporation and is set up for automated processing of food frequency questionnaires and also assists in set up and data management of various online assessments.


Cheryl H. Gilhooly, PhD, MPH, RD
Provides administrative and scientific leadership to the Dietary Assessment Unit. Advises on dietary assessment methodology; oversees training and quality control of administration, collection and interpretation of dietary intake data; and manages standardized methods of data collection and data entry. Assists in the development of new methodology and training tools; dietary assessment sections of new protocols; and necessary manual of procedures.
