Biography
Donald E. Smith, Ph.D., CMAR, CPIA is a Scientist II and the manager of the Comparative Biology Unit (CBU) at the HNRCA. Dr. Smith oversees the CBU’s 25,000 square foot animal care program, as well as the employees who work there. He ensures the HNRCA is compliant with federally mandated programs and collaborates with the HNRCA’s research programs, consulting with investigators on animal model selection, project design, selection and training of animal-related research techniques and assurance of the appropriate use of all animals in all HNRCA research activities. He is currently a co-investigator on an AFRI/NIFA grant designed to determine the dietary preventative foods/biologic active components that will reduce the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and prevent it progression to inflammation, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. He is a member of the American Association of Laboratory Animal Sciences (AALAS).
