2447, 2547, 2647, 2747, 2847: Glycemic Index (Studies 2,3,4,5 and 6) Variability Among Individuals

Men and Women aged 50 to 85

The purpose of the study is to determine whether people have different blood sugar responses to the same food.
Major Exclusions:
  • Renal or Liver disease
  • Untreated hypertension
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Smoking within the past 6 months
  • Diabetes
  • Anemia
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Alcohol consumption of more than 7 drinks per week
  • Established CVD (myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure, coronary artery bypass, graft, stenosis greater than 50%, peripheral arterial disease)
  • Weight gain or loss of more than 15 lbs within 6 months prior to enrollment
Length of Study: 2 to 6 weeks # of Visits: 1 screening. 5 visits for studies 2, 3, or 4. 4 visits for study 5. 6 visits for study 6.
Residency: 6 to 7 hours visits, no overnight stays Study diet None
Payment: Screening visit: $15. Study 2, 3, and 4: could earn up to a total of $490 if you qualify and complete the study. Study 5: could earn up to a total of $380 if you qualify and complete the study. Study 6: could earn up to a total of $780 if you qualify and complete the study. Can I work? Not on study days.
  1. Length of study
    Total length of the study including resident stays and nonresident visits.
    This does not mean you will be testing the entire time.
  2. Residency
    The length of time volunteers are required to stay overnight at the HNRCA. Residents have their own private room, bathroom, television, VCR, and phone during their stay.
  3. Payment
    The amount of reimbursement for travel and inconvenience.
  4. Number of visits
    Total number of nonresident visits.
  5. Study diet
    Indicates meals which will be provided by the HNRCA
  6. Can I work?
    Indicates if you will be able to work and if so, when.
